The Minor Pentatonic Scale

The Minor Pentatonic Scale is a Five-Note Scale which can be used in many musical situations and given that the notes it is made up of spell a Minor 7th Chord with an added 6th, it's most obvious use is over minor or minor seventh chords.

The Minor Pentatonic is closely related to the Major Pentatonic - the two scales formed by using the same notes and the Major Pentatonic Scale is in fact Inversion I of the Minor Pentatonic - for more information on Major Pentatonic Scales, please see the appropriate section.

The Minor Pentatonic is formed by the intervals -3, W, W, -3, W whilst the Major Pentatonic consists of W, W, -3, W, -3.

This can easily be seen by using A Minor Pentatonic and C Major Pentatonic as an example.

A Minor Pentatonic is made up of A, C , D, E, G and A whilst C Major Pentatonic is formed by the notes C, D, E, G, A and C - it's the same scale beginning on a different note.

The Minor Pentatonic has a very characteristic and easy to remember sound and is a bread and butter scale for most guitar players, as it is used over the I-IV-V Domonant 7 progression that makes up the Twelve Bar Blues.

For this reason, it is often confused with the Blues Scale which contains all the same notes along with an Augmented Fouth (or Diminished Fifth, depending on how you want to look at it.

The image below shows the Major Pentatonic Scale in all Twelve Keys and there are links at the bottom of the page to Guitar Tabs of the most common Major Pentatonics. Each scale is shown in Root Position and its Four Inversions starting on the Low E String.

As with all the scales in the Guitar Scales Compendium, I always notate the scale as low as I possibly can on the guitar.

So for example the Third Inversion of A Minor Pentatonic (E, G, A, C, D, E) is shown in Open Position rather than on the Twelfth Fret.
