Ronny Jordan's tremendous version of So What became better knownthan Miles Davis' original in the Nineties when the Acid Jazz movement looked like taking off - shame Acid Jazz never really took off but I'll tell what . . . So What still works on the dance floor!
Check out Ronny Jordan and the band - the arrangement's pretty easy to work out - just listen and watch his fingers!
Here's the Real Book Lead Sheet for So What by Miles Davis - the melody is in the bass clef but it can be very easily transposed to the guitar!
I've uploaded a video of Ron Carter playing the melody on the double bass which is followed by Miles Davis' fantastic cool solo.
However. the Advanced Guitar Player recommendation is Ronny Jordan's terrific 1990s Acid Jazz version - GROOVY!
The publisher doesn't pay any copyright on these tunes, so I should be OK posting this So What Lead Sheet on the site. However, every self-respecting jazz musician needs to own a copy of the Real Book, so I strongly suggest you get hold of one ASAP.
Clicking on the link below will take you to the Real Book Information Page on the Advanced Guitar BookStore that Amazon.Com runs for us. You'll see that the Real Book not only contains So What but also just about every jazz standard you ever get asked to play at jam sessions.
