Jazz Standards - Blue Monk

OK . . . there are no guitars in this recording - advanced or otherwise. But this clip of Thelonious Monk playing Blue Monk in Oslo in 1966 is a harmony lesson in itself. The band is :- Thelonious Monk - piano. Charlie Rouse - tenor. Larry Gales - bass. Ben Riley - drums.

It's really worth listening to this - I find Monk himself particularly inspiring - for the jagged harmonies, the angular melodies and the odd timing.

Of course, as it's a pretty straight blues, you can always play over it B. B. King style but some time with this should open up new possibilities for your guitar playing.

Here's the Real Book Lead Sheet for Thelonius Monk's fabulous Blue Monk. It's a really essential jazz blues to learn for both the Intermediate and the Advanced Guitar Player!

What's nice about it is that a very straight 12-bar will work and you can slip in other jazzier changes - I use some Freddie Green voicings in B flat! (I'll probably make a tab for them in C so keep an eye out for Freddie Green Blues in the Blues in C category).

However, to really get to grips with the tune, it's worth putting some work into making the changes work as written - challenging!
