This Guitar Applications 1 lesson is taken from Perfect Your Pitch - Ear Training and Sight Reading For Guitarists and centres on Melodic and Harmonic Guitar Ideas for Degrees I and III of the Major Scale
The basic idea is a latin-style riff based on the notes C and E that I've then applied to some chord inversions - I've rather confusingly called the chords C1, C1/E, C2 and C2/E. These are not conventional chord names, so I'll probably changes this to C(position 1) and C/E(position 1) etc. in the final version of the ear training course. As only two notes are involved it's difficult to come up with anything very exciting, but the point that I want to make is that, as this is an ear training course for guitarists, apart from just singing the exercises and picturing your fretboard, you should make up riffs and melodies using the notes your working on and sing them as you play them on your guitar - using Doh and Mi, of course. The image below just shows the first half of the exercise but as you can see, I start off with single notes, then play the same idea using the bass note or lower voice of the chords. Finally, I do the same thing using the high note or upper voice of the chords - it's very impotant to develop an ability to use voice leading in your rhythm playing - it makes you sound much more sophisticated and gives the soloist much more to work with!

Guitar Ear Training Programs And LinksThe accompanying Guitar Tab Files for the complete Ear Training Course are available in Guitar Pro 6 format from the Advanced Guitar Player Downloads section. If you haven't got a copy of Guitar Pro yet, Click here to visit the Guitar Pro download page. Although they often don't provide progressive Aural Skills development for beginners, ear training software programs can be very useful. I personally use EarMaster Pro - Click here to download a Trial Version of EarMaster Essential, Pro or School.
