These lesson notes correspond to the Guitar Pro Tab, PDF and Audio files for Lesson 2 - Degrees I, III and V - The Major Scale from Sight Singing Major Scales Part One of Perfect Your Pitch - Ear Training And Sight Reading For Guitar Players.
In this lesson we're practicing, the first, third and fifth degrees of the C Major scale. If you want to think of this in terms of Intervals, using the Root of C as the starting point, you are singing the Major Third (E) and the Perfect Fifyh (G) - as I've said before, I think you will develop stronger Aural Skills if you focus on these notes as Degrees I, III and V of the Major Scale. However, more adventurous students can apply these Intervals to the notes F and G and have no difficulty singing and recognising the F Major and G Major chords. Remember that the notes you are singing are Do, Mi and Sol so the first exercise goes like this:- ||: Do Mi Sol Sol | Sol Mi Do Do | Mi Mi Sol Sol | Do Mi Sol Do :|| In the first half of the lesson, were still only working Crotchets (that's Quarter Notes in US English) - you really don't want to be worrying about rhythm whilst your establishing the basic sounds in your head. However, in the second half (not shown here, but available on the tab), we start to introduce some minims and rests, just to break the rhythm up a little - you'll find holding the pitch and singing rhythmic variations quite a challenge at first!
Guitar Ear Training Links And SoftwareThe Guitar Tab Files for the complete Ear Training Course are available in Guitar Pro 6 format from the Advanced Guitar Player Downloads section. If you haven't got a copy of Guitar Pro yet, Click here to visit the Guitar Pro download page. Although they often don't provide progressive Aural Skills development for beginners, ear training software programs can be very useful. I can recommend EarMaster Pro, which provides a full array of Ear Training activities - Click here to download a Trial Version of EarMaster Essential, Pro or School.
